You Are Here – Firenze

Similar to other Italian cities, an existing mug gets an update in the form of You Are Here Firenze, with the only change being the name written in Italian, rather than English. I think this is the last one to be revised, as all the other cities have either been updated or were originally released with their Italian names. The only exception, however, might be Veròna, which could be written in the Venetian language.

Firenze was founded by the Romans in 59 BC as Florentia, meaning “flourishing” or “prosperous.” The city grew into a major medieval center of trade, banking, and art, eventually becoming the birthplace of the Renaissance in the 14th and 15th centuries under the influence of powerful families such as the Medici. The Italian name Firenze evolved naturally from the original Latin Florentia through centuries of linguistic change. The English name Florence, however, comes from the French form of the name, which entered English after the Norman Conquest of 1066, when many French place names became standard in English usage. As a result, English preserved the French-influenced version, while Italian retained its own direct evolution from Latin.
