Discovery Series Ornament – Guanacaste

The Starbucks Discovery Series Ornament Guanacaste is an especially interesting release because this is the first time Guanacaste has received its own Starbucks mug or ornament. The province occupies the northwestern corner of Costa Rica and is known for its volcanic landscapes, tropical dry forests, wildlife, ranching traditions, and long Pacific coastline. It is also one of the country’s best-known regions for outdoor activities, with national parks, beaches, hiking trails, and surf towns spread across the province.

Here are some of the natural landmarks, wildlife, and activities featured in the design:

– Arenal Volcano, part of the Cordillera de Guanacaste region, adds one of Costa Rica’s most recognizable volcanic landscapes to the design. The surrounding region is shaped by volcanic mountains, forests, hot springs, rivers, and protected natural areas. Volcanic scenery forms an important part of the experience of travelling through northern Costa Rica.

– Hiking is one of the best ways to explore Guanacaste’s natural side. Trails cross tropical dry forests, volcanic terrain, waterfalls, and protected areas where visitors can encounter wildlife and dramatically different landscapes within a relatively short distance. Parks and reserves throughout the province make nature exploration an important part of a trip to Guanacaste.

– The capuchin monkey is one of the monkeys commonly seen in the forests of northwestern Costa Rica. White-faced capuchins are intelligent and highly social animals that move through the trees in groups while feeding on fruit, insects, and other foods. They can often be spotted in national parks and forested areas near Guanacaste’s beaches.

– The beaches are among Guanacaste’s biggest attractions. The province has a long Pacific coastline with sandy bays, rocky headlands, and beach communities ranging from busy resort areas to quieter stretches surrounded by forest. Places such as Tamarindo, Playa Conchal, Playa Hermosa, and the Nicoya Peninsula have helped make the region one of Costa Rica’s main coastal destinations.

– Surfing is particularly popular along Guanacaste’s Pacific coast. Warm water and consistent waves attract surfers throughout the year, with towns such as Tamarindo and Nosara becoming internationally known surfing destinations. Beginners can find gentler breaks, while more experienced surfers have access to stronger waves along more exposed sections of the coast.
